What happens — and what we send you

Some stages happen quietly in our studio. Others trigger an automatic email so you always know where your piece stands. Here is every stage in order, with a preview of the actual email where one is sent.

1
Day 0

Order Placed & Paid

Payment is taken at the time of order. For 24 hours you can change the size or colour, or cancel; after that, your specification — size, colour, piece — is locked in.

✉ Email sent24-hour change window

Your SHIBUI order is confirmed — #SH-10482

Thank you for your order. We have received your payment, and your Iron-Black Oxford Shirt (size M) will be queued for production once your 24-hour change window closes. Estimated completion: 6–8 weeks. You can still amend size or colour within 24 hours — just reply to this email.

2
Day 1–7

Material Preparation

Your base garment — made in Vietnam, Cambodia or India — is prepared for dyeing. SHIBUI does not weave fabric or sew garments. Kakishibu from Minami-Yamashiro, Kyoto is measured out and, if needed, freshly fermented for your specific dye batch.

3
Day 7–28

Hand-Dyeing in Kyoto

The longest stage. Multiple kakishibu applications and sun-oxidation cycles take place over one to three weeks — drying time between layers can't be rushed, and weather affects oxidation speed.

Your piece is being hand-dyed in Kyoto

Your kakishibu dyeing process has now begun. This stage typically takes 1–3 weeks depending on oxidation cycles and weather. No action needed — we'll write again once dyeing is complete.

4
Day 28–42

Finishing & Inspection

After dyeing, your piece is given its final drying, finishing and pressing in Japan. Quality inspection follows — checking stitch integrity of the base garment, dye evenness, and sizing accuracy.

Delivered — welcome to SHIBUI

Your piece has arrived. We recommend unwrapping it in indirect sunlight — the first thing kakishibu does in fresh air is begin to deepen. Full care instructions are attached.
